It would be shortsighted to categorize From A Seed as just another jam band.
The group improvises with heavy doses of blues, funk and psychedelia, but its music is more abstract than contemporaries. True to form and refusing to be pigeonholed, From A Seed has successfully created a new genre worthy of a second listen.
Forget the glitz, stereotypical front man and any signs of prima donnas. This band rocks because they fit so well together. It’s obvious they have a good time performing, and that’s what makes them fun to watch and hear.
I can relate. Sound Check allows me to chase my passions. I can feel the music within me. More than ever, my ears have been immersed with pounding bass lines, thumping drum solos and earthy, acoustic harmonies. I am thankful for the artists, venues and Mooresville Weekly readers that have joined the journey. This gig makes me want to dance!
So let’s have a party! Invite all your friends to read Sound Check! Have a favorite watering hole or venue? Don’t keep it to yourself. Call, write or email so we can spread the word about artists and their supporters. Plus, shopping local boosts our economy benefiting the consumer. It’s a win-win for all concerned.
Remember, Sound Check is always about the music, designed to alert and engage readers to homegrown talent. In the meantime, enjoy the vibe.
From A Seed formed in Mooresville in 2003. Originally comprised of four members, the group recently added two new players. This addition has propelled the band in a new and positive direction.
The line-up includes guitarist Mark Evans; keyboardist Dominic Valery; vocalists Gabe Britton and Karma Ghant; percussionist Matt Doughten; and bassist Hayden Mauney.
“Wateredge Sessions,” the band’s first recording, produced a couple of favorites. Longtime fans usually ask to hear “Madcap Plain Jane” and “Satisfied” from the debut album. Their second endeavor, “In Too Deep,” has a newfound energy evident in songs like “Old Nail” and “Rope.”
This year, the Charlotte Music Awards nominated From A Seed as Band of the Year and single “Fool Bus” as Song of the Year. Humbly, members credits their fans for the recent streak of good luck.
The public can vote for their favorites by going to www.charlottemusicawards.org.
Technology has played a major role in the band’s success. From A Seed has several YouTube videos. The latest is set to be released exclusively through their Android mobile application. Or log on to www.fromaseed.com, where internet users are directed to Facebook, e-mail correspondence and a show calendar.
From A Seed recently shared the wealth by helping a downtown business celebrate a milestone. The Bath Tub Gin turned two years old, Saturday, Nov. 26 and hosted From A Seed prior to an anniversary party.
From A Seed will travel almost anywhere for a gig! December dates include two stops in Charlotte. Karma Ghant handles all booking and can be reached at 704-701-4076.
After years in advertising, Chris Montgomery followed his dreams this year to open Big Hat Larry’s Guitars, Music & More on Main Street. He served as mayor of Mooresville from 2009 to 2011.
