MOORESVILLE – Organizers say donations for the Breaststroke for Cancer swim-a-thon keep pouring in.

Lisa Kotterer estimates that 55 people participated in the fundraiser, raising about $3,000 for the Women’s Breast Health Initiative. The group gives free mammograms to women without health insurance.

Kotterer’s teenage daughters, Allison and Caroline, organized the event after she finished treatment for advanced stage breast cancer. Both girls are competitive swimmers.

She was happy with the turnout considering the fundraiser was right after the holidays.

“We’re really happy to have that checked off our list,” Kotterer said. “It was stressful. Once we were there and realized all the hard work was put in, it was fun.”

Many people attended the Jan. 5 event at Huntersville Family Fitness and Aquatics, including Ben Hesen, a swimmer on the U.S. National Team.
